Live Insects
The healthiest insects for your chickens to eat will always be the ones that have been fed a healthy diet right up to the point when your chickens gobble them up. Their nutrients have not been degraded by the high-heat drying process. They are full of moisture, so they will never cause crop impaction. They provide fun and enrichment for your flock, and best of all, they are juicy and delicious!

Dried Insects
These are not just dried, but are actually cooked in industrial microwave ovens. This is because they are generally imported from China, where manure and other bacteria-laden feedstocks are often employed, and high temperatures are needed to kill potentially harmful bacteria. This process also destroys some of the nutritional value of the insects.
The bugs are typically underfed prior to being dried, so they will enter the process with less moisture in their system. The low moisture content of dried insects can lead to crop impaction, especially in younger birds.

Dehydrated insects do not provide the fun and excitement that your flock craves, and they are rarely enjoyed as much as the tasty, live bugs available at The Wind River Bug Ranch.
